Do Americans Get It Yet???

Posted on 11 September 2009 by admin

Ok, I have a question….Do americans know that their media from tv shows, movies, the news and even video games give them a very false view of the world?? The media in america is probably the most stereotypical kind of media on earth which fills the american mind with extreme misconceptions about the world around them. If there a such thing as an ignorant american, he or she is simply ignorant because they believe what they see and hear. For example, I recently traveled to India (I’m from the U.S) and I realized that they have many malls, clubs, bars, restaurants (Modern facilities) and brilliant infrastructure in the major cities ( new delhi, bangalore, hyderabad) and improving infrastructure in Mumbai…But the media in america shows images of poverty and any news of India is always negative when infact it is the second fastest growing economy in the world(information tech and information systems)…Do americans realize this?

What Subculture Stereotype Am I? Hipster? Yuppie? Geek? Something Else?

Posted on 10 September 2009 by admin

Extensive information. What subcultural stereotype best applies?
24 year old white male
6′, 250 lbs.
Upbringing: Grew up mostly in a small-medium-sized city in southern Missouri. Upper middle-class. Lived in Central America for a few years.
Education: Three years at a state college, pursuing a BA in Religious Studies, double minoring in Philosophy and Political Science. Dropped out for financial reasons (had no parental help).
Career: I have two contracts (self-employed). One as a writer of tech & gaming news on the internet. Second doing market research for an entrepreneur. Together they pay 35-40k. Long term career goal is to become financially stable enough to start my own business related to the visual arts and the online media. Very little interest in having a family, and would rather die than move back to the suburbs.
Current living situation: Live with one roommate in a working class Hispanic immigrant neighborhood near downtown Chicago. Plan to get a studio in a more upscale (but still very urban) neighborhood in January.
Politics: Democrat, but more liberal on social and foreign policy issues. More conservative on economic issues. Radical internationalist and free trader.
Books: “The Stranger” by Albert Camus, “Solaris” by Stanislaw Lem, “Big Sur” by Jack Kerouac, “At the Mountains of Madness” by H.P. Lovecraft
Movies: French new wave films (esp. Franois Truffaut), moody Sci-fi like Blade Runner and Aliens, films of Billy Wilder, Audrey Hepburn movies, films of Wong Kar Wai, films of Werner Herzog. So mostly classics and foreign.
TV: 30 Rock, Mad Men, Weeds.
Music: M.I.A., Asobi Seksu, Common, Philip Glass, Rachid Taha, The Streets, Goldfrapp, Nine Inch Nails
Glasses: Sleek, black-rimmed Emporio Armani wraparounds.
Tops: Button up dress shirts from JC Penney or other department stores mostly — J Ferrar and Stafford. Dark, solid colors. Usually not tucked in.
Bottoms: Pants are Dockers or St. John’s Bay khakis. Sometimes cargo pants, but usually dressy khakis, off-white or dark brown.
Shoes: Black or brown loafers.
Other relevant info: Total technophile. Have an HDTV, PS3, MacBook Pro, and an iPhone. Don’t like fancy restaurants; mostly try to go to the cheapest Thai or Chinese food place I can find. Not particularly anti-corporate or into organic, free trade, or vegan anything. I think the website Stuff White People Like is hilarious and familiar but it only 40% applies to me.
I’m in the heart of hardcore geek culture because I write about video games and gadgets for a living, but I feel very disassociated because I’ve never gotten into comic books and the whole escapist fantasy subculture (ie, Star Wars).
Very snobbish about films but not about music. Love the show Frasier and everything it stands for, but can afford nothing that it stands for (fine wines, opera, etc). Obsessed with politics. Also like some oddball things, like burlesque.
Heroes are Werner Herzog, Steve Jobs, Franois Truffaut, Albert Camus, and Mikhail Gorbachev.

What Does This Poem Mean?

Posted on 09 September 2009 by admin

For English, I have to do a project on the poem Common Magic by Bronwen Wallace and I don’t know what it means. What does this poem mean? I need to know the theme, and what each line discusses here is the poem:
Tuesday, September 30, 2008
Common Magic by Bronwen Wallace
Common Magic
Bronwen Wallace
Your best friend falls in love
and her brain turns to water.
You can watch her lips move,
making the customary sounds,
but you can see they’re merely
words, flimsy as bubbles rising
from some golden sea where she
swims sleek and exotic as a mermaid.
It’s always like that.
You stop for lunch in a crowded
restaurant and the waitress floats
toward you. You can tell she doesn’t care
whether you have the baked or french-fried
and you wonder if your voice comes
in bubbles too.
It’s not women either. Or love
for that matter. The old man
across from you on the bus holds
a young child on his knee; he is singing
to her and his voice is a small boy
turning somersaults in the green
country of his blood.
It’s only when the driver calls his stop
that he emerges into this puzzle
of brick and tiny hedges. Only then
you notice his shaking hands, his need
of the child to guide him home.
All over the city
you move in your own seasons
through the seasons of others: old women faces
clawed by weather you can’t feel
clack dry tongues at passersby
while adolescente seethe
in their glassy atmospheres of anger.
In parks, the children
are alien life-forms, rooted
in the galaxies they’re grown through
to get here. Their games weave
the interface and their laughter
tickles that part of your brain where smells
are hidden and the nuzzling textures of things.
It’s a wonder that anything gets done
at all: a mechanic flails
at the muffler of your car
through whatever storm he’s trapped inside
and the mailman stares at numbers
from the haze of a distant summer.
Yet somehow letters arrive and buses
remember their routes. Banks balance.
Mangoes ripen on the supermarket shelves.
Everyone manages. You gulp the thin air
of this planet as if it were the only
one you knew. Even the earth you’re
standing on seems solid enough.
It’s always the chance word, unthinking
gesture that unlocks the face before you.
Reveals intricate countries
deep within the eyes. The hidden
lives, like sudden miracles,
that breathe there.

Is There Any “home” Left In New Orleans?

Posted on 09 September 2009 by admin

I’m an American, so I’m naturally biased to the situation in my own country. To me, there is no story more pressing than New Orleans – what happened there, and what hasn’t happened. In a way, it’s a window on the soul of America. On the one hand we see an unspeakably
corrupt administration. On the other hand courage and generosity that restores one’s faith in human nature.
New Orleans in spite of being 80% destroyed by the failure of the federal levee system is coming back strong. Strong enough to host the NBA All-Star game,to stage over thirty large scale parades during Mardi Gras, to operate its schools, hospitals, roads, hotels and restaurants. The music is back and the incomparable food and culture.
All without the help of the federal government which promised so much and has done so little – and done so much harm.
Three short videos that tell the story:
1. A short art piece which conveys the pain of losing one’s home whether in New Orleans or Bagdhad.
2. A rare and little seen video that captured what it means when a levee fails: “From street to roof in three minutes”
3. A vivid recap of how thoroughly the city and its people were abandoned by the government
whose job it was to help.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Us1d0Kvrw
